Where can someone turn when their own family household has become a place that is threatening to their safety and possibly to their very life? Tragically, many live through such a reality even now. HAVEN (Help Against Violent encounters Now) offers support centers in five undisclosed locations in Metro Detroit for people in need of crisis intervention.
Target Groups: Women, children and men abused through domestic violence or sexual assault/rape
Current Needs: Volunteers (individuals or groups, providing support behind the scenes or directly); In-Kind Donations (see current "wish list" at www.haven-oakland.org); Third Party Events (individuals or groups planning something like a golf event, BBQ or fundraiser for HAVEN); financial donations (nearly a third of the budget comes through donations and fundraising).
Most Helpful Attitude from Volunteer: One of dedication and commitment
Future: Partnering with Royal Oak Police Department to strengthen policies and training for police officers. And in general — providing direct services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and direct intervention services in order to prevent future occurrences; working toward eliminating domestic violence and sexual assault through prevention education services.
