You really had to be there on Saturday night; I can share some pictures but the music was so marvelous, and I can't relate that experience. (…)

  • The ZingTrain Comes to Downtown Rochester

Tuesday night the ZingTrain rolled into dowtown Rochester, to help local retailers and other members of the Rochester Downtown Development Authority keep on the right track to happy customers.    It was two hours of well spent time as the training arm of Zingerman's from Ann Arbor shared it's approach to caring for their business through caring for customers and employees.   The trainer Kari Nehro did a great job in her presentation and I was privileged to be able to sit on on this valuable session.   I took pictures, please feel free to look them over. • Frigidaire Old and New

We live in a downtown Rochester, Michigan home built in 1918 or so.   Our kitchen was updated in the late fifties and we still use the fifty old old Frigidaire Oven where Theresa's makes the world's best Chocolate Chip Cookies along with other great menu items to feed the family.
Take a look at our new refrigerator, also a Frigidaire.  They stand side by side in our historic kitchen.

  • Monday Night at Rochester College

Last Sunday night for some reason I was thinking about Rochester College, which is a Christian school within 2 miles of my house.   A few months back, I was invited to speak at their chapel service, and Sunday I was thinking about perhaps knocking on the door of some of the students to get some web help from someone, more savvy than I.   Interestingly, the next day I was sent an e-mail from a dear friend Pastor Rufus Harris informing me that he was going to be in a group discussion at Rochester College that evening.  He asked for prayers for the event and also inquired if I would like to attend. • Listen to Theresa Dalton and Ann Strubler on
    CD Baby Website

Last September, we had a wonderful time in a recording studio.  Theresa sang many of her original songs and Ann Strubler a dear friend and violinist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra came, adding some violin to many of those songs.   We finally have the CD in hand from those recordings.
Checkout the song samples at the CD Baby Website:

  • It Might As Well Be Spring
this January's Tuesday walk with the dogs
    thank you Al Gore

I'm as restless as a willow in a windstorm,
I'm as jumpy as puppet on a string
I'd say that I had spring fever, but I know it isn't spring
I am starry eyed and vaguely discontented, like a nightingale without a song to sing
O why should I have spring fever, when it isn't even spring

I keep wishing I were someone else, walking down a strange new street
And hearing words that I've never heard from a girl I've yet to meet
I'm as busy as spider spinning daydreams, spinning spinning daydreams
I'm as giddy as a baby on a swing

I haven't seen a crocus or a rosebud, or a robin on the wing
But I feel so gay in a melancholy way, that it might as well be spring
It might as well be spring. (…)

  • Missing Marion

I write this just a year after my mother's funeral.  Marion Dalton was born on the Fourth of July and died on Christmas Day.   Life is not as interesting without Marion,  always something different with Marion.  You could expect the unexpected.   My sister Kathy wrote a wonderful tribute to our mom in her Christmas letter, as soon as she sends the text by computer file I will put it in a new post.  (see tomorrow)  Meanwhile, here is a poem I wrote years ago in tribute to Mom:
    Marion Gertrude Dalton 1924 - 2006
Written in 1984 for her 60th birthday
    Marion, an American
    Was born July the fourth,
    With firecrackers cracking:
    She’ll be a patriot of course. (…)

  • A Sad Day in the Dalton Household

Today, I'll be taking a trip to the Humane Society to say goodbye to our family cat.   Sammi has been our pet cat for the past 16 years, as I remember our member our daughter Elisabeth had a friend who had a kitten available.   All the children rallied along with their mother asking dad to agree to add this little kitten to the Dalton family. I never was a cat person, so I wasn't quick to agree, but they wore me down, and I consented.  Frankly, cats are astounding creatures; Sammi’s agility, beauty, composure, intelligence and independence has impressed all of us, including our dogs over the years. (Dog: “How did she jump up on the table like that?”)
It's sad to lose Samatha today, in the above picture is one I took in October and she was looking pretty good.  Lately she stopped grooming herself, I think she suffers some internal pain and of course quite old, she won't consistently use the Kitty Liter Box, so she  has been living on our porch.  I know we are doing the humane thing for her, but it is hard for all of us.
