Road to Emmaus, Dormansland

Road to Emmaus, Dormansland, originally uploaded by robin.croft.

Edwardian stained glass at St John's Anglican church, Dormansland, Surrey. Designed by John Henry Dearle of Morris Co: the influence of Burne-Jones is very clear. Installed in 1912 as a memorial to Sydney Melville; both Morris and Burne-Jones had passed on, and Dearle was acting as artistic director for the company.
The illustration is of the meeting on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24: 13-27). It is the evening, and stories abound that Jesus has risen from the dead that day. Two disciples (Cleophas and another unnamed disciple) are discussing these events as they travel to Emmaus. A stranger joins in their conversations: they do not recognize Jesus and he rebukes them for their disbelief. Later they break bread together in the town.
