A Chapel Service at Cornerstone School
I was blessed last week with a great time at Cornerstone School on the east side of Detroit in a facility that was once the Lutheran School for the Deaf. It was years ago, I visited the Lutheran School for the Deaf and was very impacted by the work they were doing there. Now the property is in the hands of Cornerstone Schools which is doing a wonderful job on this campus and others educating inner-city youth. The school has a very interesting history and springs from the vision of Cardinal Adam Miada of the Roman Catholic Church and Clark Durant who is a Detroit attorney with a wonderful history of community service.
I was invited to speak at the Middle School Chapel Service again and this time I bought portraits of three presidents and presented their faith centered language in various speeches. They heard the words of George Washington and even Thomas Jefferson, that the ACLU claims so quickly as the champion of throwing everything referring to a Creator God from the Public Square. I also shared from various quotations from Abraham Lincoln. Much of the media and other forces have not only been involved in an effort to remove the Manger Scenes from the Town Square and the Ten Commandments from the City Courthouse, but also the historic records and roots of our American Judeo-Christian heritage, so well articulated through Presidential Speeches, Congressional Acts, and even Washington D.C. Historic Monuments and Architecture. There is little toleration of any Christian witness in the minds and hearts of many of these activists in what what they call “pluralism”. For many of them a “pluralistic society” is one in which we Christians shut up and keep our religion to our self and within the closed doors of our church sanctuary.
The presentation was well received and it was quite a bit of fun to have a half an hour with 200 inner-city young people who are pursuing excellence in education. Cornerstone Schools being a private school is “allowed” to have Chapel Services and I assure you we could use more citizens such as those being produced and educated at Cornerstone Schools. - Father Richard Dalton
